Why Lorem Ipsum Exists and When to Use It

Placeholder text has a five hundred year history and a specific job: letting you judge layout without reading. It also causes real damage when it escapes into production.

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin derived from a first century BC text by Cicero, adopted by typesetters centuries ago and inherited by every design tool since. Its value is precisely that it is unreadable while still having the letter distribution and word length variation of real language, so a page of it looks like a page of text without inviting anyone to read it.

What placeholder text is for

When you are evaluating typography, line length, leading or column rhythm, real copy is a distraction. Stakeholders start editing sentences instead of assessing the grid. Placeholder text keeps attention on the visual system, which is exactly what an early layout review is supposed to examine.

When it actively harms the design

Lorem Ipsum has uniform, gentle word lengths and no headings, links, numbers or long compound nouns. Real interfaces have all of those. A card that looks balanced with placeholder text can break entirely when given an actual German product name or a customer address. Any layout whose viability depends on content length should be tested with the longest and shortest realistic content, not with Latin.

There is also a strategic cost. Designing around placeholder text encourages a habit of drawing boxes and asking a writer to fill them, when the more effective sequence is often to draft the message first and shape the layout around it.

Using placeholder text sensibly

Use it for early typographic and grid exploration, where content specifics genuinely do not matter.
Switch to realistic sample content before any usability review or stakeholder sign-off.
Test each text container with content at both extremes of plausible length.
Include realistic edge cases: long names, non-Latin scripts, missing optional fields.
Make placeholder text obviously fake so it is never mistaken for approved copy.
Run a search for "lorem" across the project before every release.

Common mistakes

Shipping placeholder text to production, which happens to somebody on almost every large project.
Using Latin to evaluate a design that will render Arabic, Thai or Chinese, where metrics differ completely.
Generating exactly enough text to make the layout look good, thereby hiding an overflow bug.
Presenting placeholder text to a client, who will inevitably ask what it means.
Letting placeholder text into a seeded database that later gets indexed by search engines.

Placeholder text is a measuring instrument for typography, not a substitute for content strategy. Use it early, replace it before decisions get made, and grep for it before you deploy.
